Mike's dominates Davis Square the way the State House dominates Beacon Hill. It is
a quintessentially Somerville institution that features short-order Italian cooking:
subs, all kinds of pasti, huge calzones, old-fashioned pizzas, chicken/veal/eggplant
dinners, etc., plus juicy, "fat burgers," seafood and even lobsters. Decent
selection of wine and beer. My favorite item here, though, is the arancini -- a ball
of rice, stuffed with peas, onions and ground beef, deep fried to a golden crisp on
the outside and smothered in tomato sauce. It's overpriced now at $2.79. Very casual,
sub shop "atmosphere." (4/98)
